Order ahead and collection

Online ordering for cafés and restaurants, for collection

Let customers order and pay ahead from your own Mosey page, then collect. You set the pickup slots and how many orders each can take, and the money goes to your own Stripe account.

Every tool is optional.

How can I take orders without handing over a third of every sale?

Many owners add an ordering app because the customers are already there, then watch a large share of every order leave in commission. Delivery apps commonly take around a third. For a collection order, where nobody is driving anywhere, that is hard to justify.

The other problem is the crush. A lunchtime rush of phone orders with no limit means ten collections at one o'clock, a ticket rail nobody can read and customers standing at the counter wondering where their order is.

Order Ahead is built for the collection order. It carries a low published rate, lets you cap each slot so the kitchen is never buried, and puts the customer in your app with your menu and your ratings around it, not beside a competitor's.

How does online ordering for collection work?

  1. Switch on Order Ahead

In Account, under Enable features, switch on Order Ahead. Connect your Stripe account so customers can pay, mark the dishes that can be ordered ahead, set your pickup slots and the number of orders each can hold, then switch the service on in Settings.

  2. The order arrives paid

A customer picks their dishes, any sizes and extras, and a pickup time from the slots you have open. They pay by card at checkout. The order lands with their notes and the allergens you declared for each dish.

  3. Accept, make, mark ready

Accept the order, prepare it, then mark it ready. The customer is told at each step, and a completed order counts as a loyalty visit for them. If you use the kitchen display, tickets appear on screen instead of on paper.

What do my customers see when they order ahead?

Your menu and open times only

They see the dishes you have made available and the pickup times you have left. A slot that is full is not offered, and you can pause ordering whenever the kitchen is busy.

A clear price

The total is the food plus a small booking fee that scales with the size of the order. Mosey's commission is worked out on the food, not on the booking fee, and the customer sees the total before they pay.

Updates and a way to say they are here

They are told when the order is accepted and when it is ready. A customer on their way can tell you they have arrived, and you see it on the order so you can bring it out.

Order Ahead for collection is 1.5% of the food, before VAT on Mosey's fee. The customer pays the booking fee, not you.

How do I set up online ordering in an afternoon?

  1. Claim your business free and build your menu in Menu Builder. Scan a photo of your paper menu to start, then read every price before you publish.
  2. Open Account, then Enable features, and switch on Order Ahead. The Before you start list tells you what to have ready.
  3. Connect Stripe in Account and billing. Mosey will not let you switch ordering on until payouts are set up, so customers never reach a payment that cannot work.
  4. Mark the dishes that suit collection and declare their allergens, so every order shows them.
  5. Set your pickup slots and how many orders each can take. Cap each slot against what your kitchen can cook, not what you hope to sell.
  6. Put a test order through from your own phone and walk it through accepted, ready and collected before you tell anyone.

What does online ordering cost on Mosey?

Listing is free and there is no monthly fee for Order Ahead. When an order is paid, Mosey takes 1.5% of the food plus VAT on that fee, and Stripe's card fee is passed through at cost. The customer pays a small booking fee on top, which scales with the order. Tips carry no Mosey fee.

How is this different from a delivery app?

On a delivery app the customer belongs to the app, and you pay again each time to reach them. On Mosey the customer orders from your page, in an app where you also have ratings, a loyalty programme and a way to reach people who agreed to hear from you.

Collection also needs no driver, so there is no delivery leg to pay for. The rate reflects that, and the card shows it beside delivery so you can compare the two on your own numbers.

Refunds are made from the order, and the customer is refunded in full if you cancel it. You decide what to offer if you cannot make an item, and you can message the guest from the order.

Who is online ordering for collection right for?

Cafés and bakeries with a morning rush, takeaways and pizzerias, delis with a lunchtime queue and restaurants that want to sell a Sunday roast for collection all use it. A bar with food can take pre-orders for a match night. A food truck with a fixed pitch can take orders ahead for a lunch hour. If you only ever serve guests who sit down, you can leave it off.

Online ordering and collection questions from owners

  • How do I switch on Order Ahead?

Open Account, then Enable features, and switch on Order Ahead. Set up payouts, make sure dishes are available for it, then open Settings and switch the service on. Set your pickup slots and capacity too.

  • Who pays the booking fee?

The customer, on top of the food. Mosey's commission is on the food and not on the booking fee.

  • Can I limit how many orders I take?

Yes. Cap each pickup slot and pause ordering when the kitchen is busy. Customers only see the times that are open.

  • What happens when I mark an order ready?

The customer is told their order is ready and a collection order shows as ready for pickup. Completing the order counts as a loyalty visit for them.

  • What if I cannot make an item?

Contact the customer from the order and offer a substitute or a refund. If you cancel the order, the customer is refunded.

  • Do orders show allergens?

Yes. The allergens you declared for each dish appear on the order, as they stood when the customer ordered. Check them before you start cooking.

  • Can customers pay in cash on collection?

No. Order Ahead orders are paid by card at checkout, which is why payouts must be set up first.

  • Does it work with the kitchen display?

Yes. Order Ahead and delivery orders appear as tickets on the kitchen display, and the customer is told when the last item is ready.
