Reservation deposits and refunds on Mosey: how they work
Mosey · 23 October 2026 · 4 min read

Some places ask for a deposit to hold a table. On Mosey you either pay the deposit now or, if the place offers it, save your card and be charged only if you do not turn up. If you cancel inside the place's free cancellation window, you get the deposit back or the hold is released. The money goes directly to the place, and Mosey does not take any commission on it. Refunds follow the place's own cancellation policy, which the app shows before you confirm.
Why do places ask for deposits?
Because an empty table costs a small business money it cannot get back. A deposit makes a booking a commitment on both sides. It is not an extra charge in the usual case: most places take it off your bill. The app tells you the amount, how it is calculated (an amount per guest, for example) and what happens if you cancel.
What are the two ways to pay?
Pay now. The deposit is charged when you confirm. The screen is headed Deposit required and shows the deposit amount and the number of guests. You pay with your saved card through Stripe, which handles the card details. Mosey does not store them.
Hold card only. Where a place offers a card hold, the screen is headed Save your card and shows a hold amount. Your card is saved but not charged, and the app says it will only take the deposit if you do not turn up. You can cancel at any time up to the number of hours the screen shows before the booking. A message confirms that your card is saved.
If a place offers both, a chooser lets you pick Pay now or Hold card only.
What does free cancellation mean?
The screen says it in plain words: free cancellation up to a number of hours before your booking. After that, the deposit may be non-refundable, in whole or in part, depending on the place. The rule is the place's, and it is shown before you pay. Refunds follow the place's cancellation policy, whatever it is.
How do you get a refund?
Cancel the booking from My Bookings before the deadline. The app shows what you will get back. A refund goes back to the card you paid with, and a card hold is released. If you cancel after the deadline, the place's rule applies. If you think a charge was wrong, message the place first; a place that wants to be generous can say so.
Can you use a voucher towards the deposit?
Yes. If you have a voucher for the place, the deposit step offers it: Apply your voucher shows your balance, whether it was gifted to you or is your own, and takes the amount off after you submit. Read how to use a voucher.
Can you split the deposit with friends?
Yes, for a group booking. See how to split a booking deposit with friends.
What happens if you do not turn up?
The place marks the booking a No-show. If you paid a deposit, the place keeps it under its rule. If you held your card, the place can charge the deposit to it. A late cancellation is a cancellation, not a no-show: it never counts as a no-show against you, though the deposit rule may still apply.
What about gatherings and large groups?
Large group bookings go through Gatherings, where the organiser can pay a deposit and the group can share it. If a gathering is confirmed, the app says the deposit is paid and your gathering is confirmed. Cancellations follow the place's terms.

Questions
Common questions
Does Mosey take a cut of my deposit?
No. The screen says your deposit goes directly to the place and Mosey does not take any commission. Stripe handles the card details and Mosey does not store them.
What is a card hold?
A card hold saves your card without charging it. The place only takes the deposit if you do not turn up, and you can cancel any time up to the number of hours shown before the booking.
How do I get my deposit back?
Cancel the booking from My Bookings before the free cancellation deadline. The refund goes back to the card you paid with, and a card hold is released.
Does the deposit come off my bill?
In most cases a place takes it off the bill. The deposit screen and the place's terms say how it is treated, so check before you confirm.
What if I cancel late?
The place's rule applies, which may mean a partial refund or none. A late cancellation is not counted as a no-show against you, but the deposit rule still applies.
