How can I bring in money before a quiet month?

A quiet January or a dead Tuesday is a cash problem before it is a marketing problem. Rent and wages are due whether the tables fill or not, and a discount on the day does nothing for the bank balance this week.

A gift voucher turns a future meal into cash today. The buyer pays at once and the person who receives it comes in. It also introduces you to a guest who may never have found you.

The old way, a paper voucher in a drawer, is hard to track and easy to lose. A digital voucher is bought in the app, sent to a friend and redeemed at the till, and you can see the balance on every one.

How do gift vouchers work on Mosey?

  1. Switch vouchers on

    Set up payouts so the money can reach you, then open Vouchers and turn them on. Choose two or three values that match how people spend with you, such as a coffee, a brunch for two or a tasting menu.

  2. A guest buys and gives

    Guests open your page in the app and choose a value, for themselves or as a gift. The buyer pays at once, and a gift voucher is sent to a friend, who sees it in their own app.

  3. Redeem it at the till

    At the till, attach the guest and apply the voucher to the bill. It settles part or all of it, and the rest is paid as normal. The Vouchers page shows the balance left on each one, so you always know what you owe in food and drink.

What do my customers see when they buy a voucher?

A simple choice

A short list of values on your page, with a gift option. It is paid for straight away, so there is no invoice and no waiting on either side.

A gift that arrives in their app

The person who receives it sees the voucher in their own Mosey app and can spend it at your business whenever they like, within any expiry you set and state where the voucher is sold.

A bill that settles cleanly

A voucher that covers the whole bill settles it with no card charge when they pay with Mosey Pay, and any shortfall is paid by card as normal.

A voucher is cash in the bank before the meal. You are not owed anything later: the guest has already paid.

How do I sell my first gift voucher?

  1. Claim your business free and connect Stripe in Account and billing, so voucher payments can reach you.
  2. Open Vouchers, turn them on in the settings and pick two or three values rather than ten. Name them for what they buy.
  3. Say plainly what a voucher can and cannot be used for, and whether it covers service and drinks. State any expiry where the voucher is sold.
  4. Buy one yourself and spend it at the till, so you know what the guest sees and what your staff see.
  5. Show your staff how to apply a voucher and read the balance. Practise once with a test sale before service.
  6. Tell your followers, put the link on your counter card and mention it when people ask what to get a friend.

What do gift vouchers cost on Mosey?

There is no subscription for vouchers. When a voucher is sold, Mosey takes 4.5% of its value, the money goes to your own Stripe account and Stripe's card fee is passed through at cost. You pay nothing on a voucher that is never bought.

How is this different from a paper voucher or a gift card company?

A paper voucher cannot be tracked. A digital one shows its balance on the Vouchers page, so you know how much food and drink you still owe at any time.

A gift card company sits between you and the buyer, and often between you and your money. Here the payment goes through your own Stripe account and the buyer is a Mosey customer you can reward.

A voucher you sold in person for cash is voided rather than refunded through Mosey, because you hold the cash, and voiding needs the issue refunds permission. A refund approved by you pays face value back and never the processing fee. Rules about expiry differ by country, so check yours before you set one (in Ireland a voucher that expires must last at least five years), and ask your accountant how to treat unspent balances.

Who are gift vouchers right for?

Restaurants and bars suit gifting at Christmas and for birthdays, when people look for a gift that is an evening out. Cafés and bakeries can sell a coffee-and-cake value. A tasting menu or a supper club is an easy thing to give. A takeaway or food truck is less likely to need vouchers, though a value for a lunch can still work.

  • What does Mosey charge on vouchers?

    A percentage of the voucher value, shown on the pricing page, charged when the voucher is sold. There is no subscription for the feature.

  • Can a guest give a voucher to someone else?

    Yes. A voucher can be bought as a gift and sent to another person, who sees it in their own app and can spend it at your business.

  • Can I refund a voucher?

    A refund you approve pays back face value and never the processing fee. A voucher sold for cash in person is voided instead, which needs the issue refunds permission.

  • Can a voucher pay for a whole Mosey Pay bill?

    Yes. A voucher that covers the whole bill settles with no card charge, and any shortfall is paid by card as normal.

  • Do I have to connect Stripe first?

    Yes. Vouchers stay off until payouts are set up, so a guest never reaches a payment that cannot work.

  • Should I set an expiry?

    Rules on gift card expiry differ by country, so check yours before you set one. In Ireland, a voucher that expires must last at least five years from the day it is bought, and Mosey will not save a shorter time.
